    • Pair-non-Pair is one of the most remarkable decorated caves belonging to the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic (from 33,000 to 26,000 BC). Its engraved bestiary (horses, ibexes, deer, mammoths, cattle) is enriched with an exceptional representation of megaceros.
Third ornate cave revealed to the world. Pair-non-Pair was discovered in 1881 by an eminent archaeologist, François Daleau. Acquired by the State in 1900, it became the first cave classified as a historic monument.
A key place for knowledge of prehistory. The work of François Daleau constitutes one of the first scientific excavations of a prehistoric cave with the progressive clearing of the archaeological layers and the notation of all the remains found. Pair-non-Pair continues to occupy an important place in contemporary prehistoric and paleontological sciences.
A precious testimony on the planet. Occupied for 60,000 years, before and after the Aurignacian, the cave yielded 15,000 tools and 6,000 bones spread across 60 animal species, sources of information on the evolution of the human species, the lithic industry and bone but also the climate and the environment.

Guided tours, in French, only. Our guide spoke a little English to help us understand the main points she was making. Some of the drawings are very difficult to see even with the guides laser pointer.

Very interesting place to visit (approximately 1hr) even if the Cave is a bit small, but the guide will provide lots of information and it always good to put in perspective that more than 60.000 years ago our ancestors were populating the area and engraving the local animals. Of course they also have a small exhibition of Prehistoric artifacts found on site.

Absolutely loved it! Our guide for the day was fantastic. Her knowledge and enthusiasm really made the experience top knotch. Unlike some of the more well known caves in France such as Chauvet or Lascaux, you actually get to experience the real cave.
