Fondée en 1079 par le duc d'Aquitaine et Gérard de Corbie, elle abrite, à son apogée, quelque 300 moines. Ruinée et abandonnée à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, elle fait l’objet d’un classement au titre des monuments historiques par la liste de 1840.
En décembre 1998 l'abbaye est classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO au titre des chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle en France.
