Entre-deux-Mers, a name that evokes dreams! Nestled between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, this vast triangle of vineyards and fortified towns is one of the most captivating areas of the Gironde. Here, each village tells a different chapter of regional history: fortified towns born from the Hundred Years' War, prosperous river ports along the wine route, hamlets perched on ancient cliffs… We invite you to explore this wine-growing region, starting from Bordeaux along the Garonne, before heading up towards the Dordogne. A two- to three-day itinerary if you want to take your time and stop everywhere, or a pleasant one-day loop to see the must-see sights.

11 must-see towns and villages in the Entre-deux-Mers region

Langoiran

The first stop on the road from Bordeaux, Langoiran, overlooks the Garonne River from its rocky promontory. The village owes its fame to its medieval castle, one of the few fortresses in the region to have retained its defensive architecture almost intact since the 13th century. You can visit it on your own or with a guide, who will tell you about the sieges it has withstood and the families who have resided there.

The village itself is worth a stroll: steep alleyways, the Moulin du Gaillardon on the riverbank, and a collection of religious monuments including the curious presbytery known as the Hermitage. The port of Langoiran, once bustling on the wine trade route to Bordeaux, adds a picturesque touch to the riverside walk.

Within just a few hundred meters, Rions encapsulates three major periods of regional history: the Iron Age, the Hundred Years' War, and the Wars of Religion have each left their mark. The medieval town, encircled by ramparts, can be explored like an open-air history book : its remains tell the story of invasions, successive fortifications, and the daily life of a small fortified town in the Gironde region.

A discovery trail, designed by the tourist office, allows you to understand these different historical layers at your own pace, with explanatory panels and a marked route through the alleyways.

Cadillac

Cadillac has managed to survive the centuries by preserving its entire fortified walls: walking around the ramparts is the best way to understand what a fortified bastide was like in the Middle Ages. The town center, organized around its arcaded square, has retained the atmosphere of a small trading capital of yesteryear.

The ducal castle, a true architectural gem built for the Duke of Épernon, is well worth a visit : monumental fireplaces, painted ceilings, and formal French gardens tell the story of the splendor of the 17th-century Gironde nobility. Nearby, the wine museum explains why Cadillac lent its name to an entire renowned wine appellation.

Sainte-Croix-du-Mont

The atmosphere changes completely in Sainte-Croix-du-Mont : this village perched on a rocky escarpment boasts one of the most spectacular landscapes in the entire Entre-deux-Mers region. Beneath your feet lies a unique geological wonder: limestone cliffs riddled with fossilized shells and oysters, remnants of a sea that covered the area millions of years ago. A walk along the cliffs, with its staircases carved into the rock and breathtaking views over the Garonne plain, is an absolute must.

Tastes Castle, now the village hall, completes the walk with its park and its overlooking terrace, one of the most beautiful viewpoints over the neighboring Sauternes vineyards.

Pondaurat

More discreet than its neighbors, Pondaurat charms with its peaceful atmosphere. A former Commandery, the village preserves a beautiful collection of religious monuments (churches, monastery, wayside crosses), testifying to a community life organized around the religious order that shaped the place.

However, it is nature that makes the visit so charming: the banks of the Bassane, a small river that crosses the village, lend themselves to lovely refreshing walks, such as the loop of the two churches, an accessible route for families that connects the two religious buildings of the village by following the water.

La Réole

Classified as a city of art and history, La Réole is undoubtedly the richest city on the entire route. Perched above the Garonne, this ancient medieval city preserves an exceptional heritage : monastery, abbey, church, towers and ramparts follow one another along the cobbled streets, alongside old houses and the town hall.

Don't miss the Quat'Sos castle while strolling through the town.

Monségur

Monségur is the very archetype of the medieval bastide: a grid plan, ramparts, a central covered square, and a church dominating the whole. Its tower with its parapet walk offers a panoramic view of the village rooftops and its half-timbered houses, while the 19th-century market hall recalls the town's mercantile vocation, still active today on market days.

What makes Monségur particularly appealing is the continuity of its history: from the Middle Ages to the present day, the village has managed to remain inhabited and vibrant, without becoming a mere static backdrop for tourists.

Castelmoron d'Albret

Perched on its rocky spur, Castelmoron d'Albret holds a unique title: that of the smallest commune in France. But don't be fooled by its size: its past stretches back over a thousand years, and the fortified village that still stands today bears witness to a history as rich as it is discreet.

A marked walking route, provided by the tourist office, guides you through the cobbled streets, between ramparts, old houses built against the rock, and viewpoints overlooking the Dropt Valley. The visit takes about half an hour, but the unique, almost timeless atmosphere of the place invites you to slow down.

Sauveterre-de-Guyenne

A rare feature in the region: Sauveterre-de-Guyenne is an English bastide, founded during the period when Aquitaine was under Plantagenet rule. But the site's history goes back much further: prehistoric remains, Neolithic dolmens, a Gallo-Roman villa… The area has been continuously occupied since the Upper Paleolithic, making it one of the richest archaeological territories in the Entre-deux-Mers region.

The bastide layout, inherited from the English foundation, is still perfectly visible in the street plan and the central arcaded square. It's an excellent starting point for cycling enthusiasts: the Roger Labépie greenway, built on a former railway line, allows you to explore the surrounding countryside without a car.

Blasimon

The fortified town of Blasimon is distinguished by the density of its religious and industrial heritage. The Benedictine abbey church impresses with its sculpted portal, adorned with finely crafted biblical scenes. It is one of the finest examples of Romanesque art in the Entre-deux-Mers region.

Nearby, two mills bear witness to the village's past economic activity: the Borie mill and the fortified watermill of Labarthe, a rare example of a defensive mill in the region.

Creon

The final stop on our itinerary, Créon, is another English bastide town, but it has managed to retain a commercial dynamism that other villages in the region have lost. Its abbey is well worth a visit, as is the central square, which is particularly lively on market days.

Créon is also an excellent gateway for exploring the Entre-deux-Mers by bike : the town has a rental station and a very developed network of cycle paths, notably via the old railway line converted into a greenway — an excellent way to reach neighboring villages without a car.

How much time should I allow?

To explore the villages in depth, allow 2 to 3 days. If you only have one day, choose one route: Langoiran → Cadillac → Sainte-Croix-du-Mont (Garonne side) or La Réole → Monségur → Castelmoron d'Albret → Sauveterre-de-Guyenne (southern bastide side).

Which season is best for visiting the region?

Spring and autumn offer ideal light for photography and avoid the summer crowds, particularly in Cadillac and La Réole. Summer remains pleasant thanks to the shade of the medieval streets, but book your castle visits in advance.
