It is called the "Leyre" in the Landes department and the "Eyre" in the Gironde. This coastal river, also known as the "Little Amazon," flows through the heart of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park, all the way to the Arcachon Basin. This waterway is navigable by canoe or kayak for nearly 90 km. So, a heads-up to sports enthusiasts or nature lovers who wish to discover this fragile natural environment in its own private setting…

A natural gem to be preserved…

The Petite Leyre and the Grande Leyre (a section designated as a Wild River) converge at the Hourc d'Eyre (meaning "water fork" in Gascon), in the commune of Moustey in the Landes region, to form a single river. The amber-hued Leyre, beneath its protective canopy of deciduous trees known as a "gallery forest," gradually widens to form a generous delta, a mosaic of salt marshes and exceptional natural habitats, in the Arcachon Basin. Moreover, the landscapes of what are known as the "Leyre Valleys" are classified as a " Registered Site," and the numerous habitats and species present are of significant heritage value (notably classified under Natura 2000 and/or RAMSAR).

Along the banks of the gallery forest, observe the Royal Fern, a primitive fern with vibrant green hues. Also, keep an eye out for the turquoise blue of the demoiselles or the swift kingfisher. As the water flows, aquatic plants unfold with the rhythm of the shifting sands and patches of sunlight. They likely conceal elvers or young Aquitaine pike. Perched on a branch, basking in the sun, you might be lucky enough to glimpse the European pond turtle, and on the sand, the tracks of the elusive European otter.

      Canoeing on the Leyre

There are several routes for canoeing and kayaking down the Leyre River, for half a day, a full day, or even multi-day trips (up to 5 days). Along the 90km of navigable waterway, 26 launch and landing points have been developed, and several rest stops are located along the way. Numerous providers and water sports centers offer rentals, either for independent paddling or guided trips with river guides. This is particularly true of water sports centers bearing the "Valeurs Parc Naturel" (Natural Park Values) label.

Regardless of the option you choose, we always advise you to consult a professional to find out about the state of the waterway, navigation conditions, etc.

      Best practices

In such a natural treasure, your exploration should remain discreet and peaceful. Breathe, enjoy... Take only your trash and leave no trace of your visit on the water, the banks, or on the property of the riverside landowners.

      • When canoeing: check the condition of the route, the weather, the water level and make sure you are in good physical condition and well equipped.
      • Respect the wildlife, the flora, other users/owners and report any incident or pollution to the Park.
      • Leave no trace of your visit (not even a GPX track on the internet).

      The following are prohibited :

      • Motorboat navigation
      • Night navigation
      • Fire and wild camping in the valley
      • The harvesting of protected species
