About

    • Château Desmirail, Grand Cru Classé 1855 and exceptional wine tourism experience in Margaux

In the heart of the Margaux appellation, bordering the legendary Médoc Wine Route, Château Desmirail is one of the great names of the Bordeaux wine region. A 3rd Growth Classified in 1855, the estate spans some forty hectares spread across Margaux-Cantenac, Soussans, and Arsac, under the stewardship of Denis Lurton, heir to a winemaking dynasty that has left its mark on the history of the Médoc. Winner of the Best of Wine Tourism 2024 award in the "Architecture and Landscapes" category, Desmirail caters to lovers of fine Bordeaux wines, couples on a wine-tourism getaway, and groups seeking an immersive experience, all just 30 minutes from Bordeaux.

An immersive visit to the heart of a Grand Cru Classé vineyard in the Médoc

Since 2010, Denis Lurton has opened the pink marble gates of Château Desmirail to visitors eager to discover a true Bordeaux wine heritage. The tour takes you from the elegant 18th-century manor house to the 19th-century Médoc winery, both meticulously renovated to offer an immersion into the history and expertise of the estate. You will discover the inner workings of a Grand Cru Classé: the vines worked by hand and with a plow, the typical Médoc grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot), the traditional vinification in wooden and stainless steel vats, and of course, the tasting of the Château's wines —elegant, modern, and best enjoyed for their fruitiness in their youth or after several years of aging.

Themed tours, horse-drawn carriage rides and private events

Beyond the standard tour, Desmirail offers several bespoke wine tourism experiences. Themed tours allow visitors to explore the estate from different perspectives, from terroir to vertical tasting, and the team is happy to welcome groups for corporate seminars or private tours. A favorite since 2019: horse-drawn carriage rides pulled by Iris, the estate's beloved mare, offering a poetic and original way to discover the vineyard—an experience particularly appreciated by families and those seeking unique moments. For guided tours with set prices and reservations, please visit the château's official website or contact the team directly.

An estate committed to sustainable viticulture

Since the 2018 vintage, Château Desmirail has embraced sustainable agriculture, continuously adapting its practices to ecological challenges. Chemical weed control and insecticides have been banned for decades, the soil is cultivated by hand, and the harvest is done plot by plot to preserve grape quality and soil balance. This philosophy is reflected in the wines, which express all the finesse and elegance of the Margaux style. To extend the tasting experience at home, Desmirail offers an online shop where you can order the estate's vintages. The château is open seven days a week from May to October, making it the perfect opportunity to combine a visit with a broader exploration of the châteaux of Margaux and the Médoc wine region.
