  • English
    • The Pont de Pierre, crossing the Garonne, is an emblem of Bordeaux. Its construction, decided by Napoleon I in 1810, was a major challenge, finally inaugurated in 1822. Before it, crossing the river was complex, and this bridge became essential for the development of the city.

Characterized by its 17 arches, it is sometimes said that this number corresponds to the letters of "Napoleon Bonaparte", although this is a legend. Each arch was once decorated with a bust of the emperor. Built of cut stone, it was for a long time the only bridge over the Garonne in Bordeaux, supporting heavy traffic of vehicles and trams.

The Pont de Pierre has been undergoing major consolidation work in recent years to ensure its longevity and safety. Due to its great age and the heavy traffic it has carried for nearly two centuries, the bridge's structure requires special attention. The work aims to strengthen the foundations and piers, which are sometimes damaged by flooding from the Garonne and wear and tear over time.

These works, often complex and carried out in a river environment, demonstrate the desire to preserve this emblematic architectural heritage of Bordeaux for future generations, especially since it is now mainly dedicated to soft modes of transport.
