Place des Quinconces Historic Monuments in Bordeaux

The Place des Quinconces is one of the largest squares in Europe, covering approximately 12 hectares in Bordeaux, along the Garonne River. Over time, this monumental esplanade has become a focal point of Bordeaux life, serving as a major hub for public transport with its tram and bus lines.

The square is dominated by emblematic monuments that give it its unique character. In the center stands the imposing Monument aux Girondins, erected between 1894 and 1902. This masterpiece commemorates the Girondin deputies guillotined during the French Revolution, with its tall column topped by the Statue of Liberty breaking her chains, and its fountain decorated with allegorical sculptures representing the Triumph of the Republic and the Triumph of Concord. At the ends on the Garonne side are two rostral columns (decorated with ship prows), symbolizing trade and navigation, pillars of the Bordeaux economy. Finally, statues of illustrious figures such as Montaigne and Montesquieu watch over the square.

Thanks to its size and accessibility, the Place des Quinconces is a privileged place for hosting major events, such as fairs (Foire aux Plaisirs, Foire à la Brocante), circuses and various cultural and sporting events throughout the year.
