A Gascon cadet with a meteoric rise, a precursor to the Musketeers, the Duke of Épernon had this castle built during the reigns of Henry IV and Louis XIII. Sumptuous and military, his palace, fit for kings, retains monumental fireplaces, tapestries, painted ceilings... but became a women's prison in the 19th century. An extraordinary destiny.

A little disappointed by the visit to the Ducal Castle. The building is magnificent and well-maintained. However, the tour clearly lacks atmosphere. The information sheet provided at the entrance, like all the visitor information sheets for National Monuments, is very brief. It's important to keep in mind that the castle has undergone numerous transformations (ducal castle, then women's prison) and periods of destruction, so it remains rather empty. The self-guided tour took about an hour. The first two floors are a bit tedious; a repetitive sequence of antechamber, bedroom, and study (x4). There are some superb fireplaces and tapestries from the 16th and 17th centuries to see. As for the attic and the cells of the women's reformatory, the visit is truly enlightening (too much text at times, especially in the cellars). I wasn't particularly convinced by the exhibition on the national furniture "butchered" by artists. The opening hours are clearly indicated everywhere (even at the entrance): 10:00 AM, but the doors didn't open until 10:30 AM! A common advantage of all National Monuments is the unbeatable pricing and the availability of free admission!
