    • Bordeaux's Place de la Victoire is an iconic location that combines rich history, contemporary art, and a vibrant student atmosphere. Over the centuries, this major city square has evolved into a popular meeting point.

History and Significance of Victory Square

The origin of the name Place de la Victoire is deeply rooted in French history. It primarily commemorates the Victory of Castillon in 1453, marking the end of the Hundred Years' War and the victory of French troops over the English. Originally a medieval fairground outside the city walls, the square was transformed to reflect the urban development of Bordeaux, becoming a social gathering place from the 17th century and acquiring its current configuration in the 19th century.

      Emblematic Monuments of Victory Square

Victory Square is punctuated by several major points of interest that attract visitors and locals:

      • The Porte d'Aquitaine: this imposing classical-style arch is a historic and symbolic entrance to Bordeaux city center.
      • The Obelisk and the Turtles by Ivan Theimer: Since 2005, the square has been adorned with a spectacular 16-meter obelisk made of red marble and two large bronze turtles, works by the Czech artist Ivan Theimer. These sculptures are an ode to the richness of the Bordeaux vineyards, their shells being engraved with the names of wine appellations.
      • The oldest vine in Bordeaux: an unusual and charming feature, a two-hundred-year-old vine (located at number 2 of the square) continues to produce grapes, of which a small harvest is carried out each year.
      • The Faculty of Medicine: The historic building of the Faculty of Medicine, with its distinctive façade and allegorical sculptures, contributes to the academic character of the square.

Atmosphere and Student Life on Place de la Victoire

Thanks to its proximity to the University of Bordeaux, Place de la Victoire is the beating heart of student life in Bordeaux. It is an extremely lively area, full of bars, restaurants, cafes, and independent shops. The square serves as a meeting place, gathering place, and regularly hosts cultural events. It also lies at the southern end of the famous Rue Sainte-Catherine, one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe, reinforcing its central role in Bordeaux's urban life.

Easy access to Place de la Victoire Bordeaux

Place de la Victoire is easily accessible thanks to Bordeaux's public transport network. It is served by tram line B (Victoire stop) as well as several bus lines, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the rest of the city.
