Let's embark on an adventure together that will leave you speechless!

In 2025, the Bassins des Lumières celebrate their 5th anniversary!

The Bassins des Lumières: a unique setting

Bordeaux naval base
Former Bordeaux marine basin now known as the Bassins des Lumières

Before you push open the door and enter the darkness, signs explain what you're about to discover. From the first steps inside, the Bassins des Lumières reveals its extraordinary nature. Forget traditional museums. Here, art comes to life.

The Bordeaux submarine base was built in 1941 by the Germans during World War II. It wasn't until 2020 that the Bassins des Lumières were opened to the general public.

The architecture is breathtaking : immense walls of raw concrete, massive columns rising towards the ceiling and dark pools of water stretching as far as the eye can see. This singular atmosphere, both monumental and slightly somber, creates a striking contrast with the liveliness of the projections. The place itself becomes an integral part of the work. Its colossal dimensions amplify the feeling of immersion and give a particular resonance to each projected image. We feel tiny in the face of the immensity, but also strangely protected, as if in a cathedral of a new kind. During our visit, the heat begins to persist in Bordeaux. The ambient air therefore becomes increasingly heavy, like that which one can encounter in tropical forests.

It is on this raw canvas that technological immersion works its magic. Hundreds of video projectors and speakers radically transform the space. The light projections do not just dress the walls. They follow the smallest reliefs, stretch over the imposing pillars and are spectacularly reflected in the water of the pools. This play of mirrors multiplies the images to infinity, creating a constantly moving kaleidoscope that envelops the viewer 360 degrees. Every detail of the works is amplified, each shade of color takes on an incredible intensity. All of this is orchestrated by a perfectly synchronized soundtrack that amplifies the emotions, sometimes soft and contemplative, sometimes powerful and enveloping. Let yourself be guided into a dimension where the boundaries between art and reality fade.

Exhibitions: a journey to the heart of art

Egypt of the Pharaohs

Exhibition on Egypt

During our visit to the Bassins des Lumières in Bordeaux, we were fortunate enough to discover a captivating program of exhibitions, a true journey through time and space. The main exhibition, "Egypt of the Pharaohs", immerses us in the heart of more than three millennia, from the Old Kingdom and the construction of the pyramids to the New Kingdom and its emblematic pharaohs.

  • A "Nation of Giants" : The exhibition begins with a reference to the travel journals of David Roberts, who, faced with the immensity of Egyptian monuments, wrote: "We are a people of dwarves visiting a nation of giants." This introduction sets the tone and prepares the visitor for the grandeur of what they are about to discover.
  • A chronological and thematic journey : The exhibition doesn't just project images; it tells a story. It traces the major periods of Pharaonic Egypt, highlighting the reigns of key figures such as Khufu (builder of the Great Pyramid), Akhenaten (with his aesthetic and religious upheavals), Hatshepsut (the female pharaoh), and, of course, Ramses II (the builder and warrior).
  • Monumental architecture in motion : You are transported to the foot of the pyramids of Giza, which are being built block by block before your eyes, accompanied by music that evokes the scale of these ancient construction sites. The colossal temples, with their columns adorned with hieroglyphs, rise and surround you, recreating the sacred atmosphere of these places of worship.
  • Scenes from Daily Life : Beyond the monuments, the exhibition brings to life the more intimate aspects of Egyptian civilization. You can see scenes of life along the Nile, customs, and celebrations. Bas-reliefs, tomb murals, and ancient papyri unfold, revealing the richness of their art and beliefs.
  • The Valley of the Kings and Queens : A highlight of the exhibition is undoubtedly the exploration of the tombs of the main necropolis of the New Kingdom. The walls of the Basins are then covered with vibrant frescoes from the Valley of the Queens. They guide you on the journey to the afterlife as the Egyptians conceived it, with its deities, funerary rituals, and symbols. The immersive reconstruction of Tutankhamun's funerary mask is particularly emblematic and striking.
  • Music and narration : Immersion is greatly enhanced by the soundtrack. The music is carefully selected to match each sequence. It alternates between mystical melodies, driving rhythms, and compositions that evoke the grandeur of the pharaohs. The visual narration is fluid, allowing the player to follow the mythological and historical narratives.

The Orientalists

At the same time, the short exhibition on the Orientalists highlights iconic works by artists such as Ingres, Delacroix, and Gérôme. Their canvases, projected on a colossal scale, reveal a richness of detail and a palette of colors rarely seen in museums. It offers a new perspective on these romantic visions of the Orient.

Facing these projected works, you will feel a mixture of wonder and deep contemplation. The size of the projections, the subtle animation of the details and the way the images blend into one another created an almost meditative experience. The scenes where the Egyptian deities seem to float above the water, or when the desert landscapes of the Orientalists stretch as far as the eye can see on the immense walls, will leave you speechless. These are moments when the Bordeaux Gironde Guide felt like an integral part of these living paintings.

The Giants and Entropy

The “Cube” and the “Citerne” are more intimate spaces.

The Cube is a 220 m², 8-meter-high, soundproofed space. The "Citerne," meanwhile, allows for an even more intense immersion.

During our visit, we were able to admire two contemporary creations: "Giants of Australia's Ancient Forests" and "Entropy". Take the time to sit on the floor or on the immense cushions. The sounds of the primeval forests and the organic rhythms of life's development over thousands of years visually complemented the experience, making these distant worlds incredibly tangible.

The exhibitions are designed and imagined 2 to 3 years before the public discovers them in the former submarine base in Bordeaux.

What makes the experience unforgettable

Free movement

The interaction with the space is constant and fluid. It is possible to move freely, to sit sometimes to live the experience in a different way or to walk along the pools to observe the works from different angles. The interaction of the projections with the water of the pools is particularly fascinating: the reflections dance on the surface, distorting and magnifying the images. This creates a kaleidoscopic effect that adds a dreamlike dimension to the whole. It is this freedom of movement and this total immersion that make the visit to the Bassins des Lumières so unique.

View from the stands

A visit to a redesigned museum

This approach also contributes to the accessibility of art. The digital format and the grandeur of the show deconstruct the barriers often associated with traditional museums. There are no panels to read (or very few), no imposed silence. It is simply an invitation to let oneself be carried away by the beauty and the visual and sonic emotion. This opens art to a much wider audience, including those who do not usually frequent cultural institutions. This gateway is unique for discovering the history of art and civilizations in a fun and captivating way, making culture accessible to all, without prerequisites.

An experience to try with the family

The Bassins des Lumières are a true spectacle for all ages. Not all visitors have the same perception of what they see.

  • The children, amazed, run after the lights, dance with the projections and exclaim at the grandeur of the images. They prove to us that art can be an unexpected playground.
  • Adults, whether art lovers or simply curious, are equally captivated. Some sit and contemplate, others wander around to observe every detail.

This ability to bring together and amaze different generations simultaneously is proof of the strength and universality of this Bordeaux experience.

The Bassins des Lumières in Bordeaux: a must-see

A visit to the Bassins des Lumières are much more than just a cultural outing. It is a total immersion, a sensory and emotional journey to the heart of art and history. The bold combination of the industrial architecture of a former submarine base and cutting-edge technologies creates a visit of rare intensity. The works are no longer simple images, but universes in which we are invited to lose ourselves.

This ability to transform the perception of art, to make it alive, accessible, and deeply moving, makes the Bassins des Lumières an exceptional place. And what makes this experience all the more precious is that the exhibitions vary regularly throughout the year. Each new program is a solicitation to discover new artists and themes, thus ensuring that each visit is unique.

Whether you're a seasoned art lover or simply looking for an extraordinary experience, we highly recommend stepping through the doors of the Bassins des Lumières. Prepare to be transported and see art like never before.
