  • English
    • Bordeaux City Hall , also known as the Rohan Palace, is one of the city's most imposing and elegant monuments. Located in the heart of the historic center, opposite Saint-André Cathedral, this 18th-century palace is an architectural masterpiece that testifies to the grandeur of Bordeaux and the municipal power it houses.

History and Architecture of the Rohan Palace

Construction of the Palais Rohan began in 1771 under the leadership of Archbishop Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan, hence its initial name. Designed by architect Richard-François Bonfin, it was completed in 1784, just before the French Revolution. Its architecture is a remarkable example of the neoclassical style, characterized by clean lines, perfect symmetry, and the use of Corinthian columns.

Originally the residence of the archbishop, the Palais Rohan was nationalized during the Revolution and became the Prefecture of the Gironde. It was in 1837 that it acquired its current function as Bordeaux City Hall, seat of the city council and administration.

A Rich Interior and Precious Collections

While the exterior of the Palais Rohan impresses with its majestic façade, the interior also reveals treasures. Although primarily an administrative workplace, some of its rooms are open to the public during special tours or events. You can admire richly decorated salons, frescoes, and works of art that bear witness to its prestigious past.

The Palais Rohan also houses the Bordeaux Museum of Fine Arts, which is accessed through a separate entrance adjacent to the City Hall. The museum is housed in two wings of the palace and features a remarkable collection of paintings, sculptures, and drawings from the 15th to the 20th century, including works by great European masters.

A Strategic Location in the Heart of Bordeaux

The City Hall enjoys a privileged location, at the intersection of Bordeaux's main historical and tourist sites. It faces Saint-André Cathedral and its isolated tower, the Pey-Berland Tower, offering an exceptional architectural panorama. Its proximity to Place Pey-Berland, Rue Sainte-Catherine and the historic district makes it a must-see for any exploration of the city center.

      Visit Bordeaux City Hall

Although the City Hall is an administrative building, its historical and architectural significance makes it a monument worth admiring from the outside. Occasional guided tours are sometimes offered to explore certain interior rooms.

Bordeaux City Hall is an essential stopover for understanding the history and identity of this city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
