A must-see for anyone interested in oenology and Bordeaux wines, Margaux is not only a renowned wine region, but also a charming town to discover during your wine-tasting trip. Let's begin our tour!

Margaux

Margaux, a village in the heart of the vineyards in the Médoc

Located on the banks of the Garonne River, the town of Margaux is an ideal starting point for exploring the Médoc region in the Gironde. Nestled amidst the Médoc vineyards, just 40 minutes from Bordeaux, it offers a unique landscape that transforms with the seasons, as the leaves turn shades of green, yellow, ochre, and purple throughout the year. While the town itself is pleasant to visit, with its Enlightenment-era Saint-Michel church and the Mademoiselle de Margaux chocolate factory, renowned worldwide for its specialties, its main attraction remains the wine, particularly the Margaux AOC. With cellars, châteaux, tours, and workshops, head to Margaux soon to discover this famous wine region and its unique characteristics, and complete your stay with well-deserved relaxation at Les Bains de Margaux, the spa at the Relais de Margaux.

Margaux, a unique vineyard in the heart of the Médoc

It's hard not to mention this delicious, deep purple wine with its fruity aromas of raspberry, cherry, and redcurrant, and its subtle roasted notes that have made the renowned Margaux AOC appellation so famous. This exceptional vineyard, spanning 1,500 hectares, benefits from a mild and sunny climate, resulting in a unique wine with powerful and aromatic terroir. The appellation's vineyards are spread across four communes : Margaux-Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac, and Labarde, all located on the left bank of the Garonne River. Want to discover Margaux AOC wine? Here are several options:

  • Take the Margaux castles loop to explore on foot or by bike, a fantastic route marked by around twenty castles in a setting of grapes.
  • Take the Médoc Wine Route, making a stop in Margaux, which is the first stage of this wine tour.
  • Visit the Margaux Wine and Tourism Centre which reveals all the secrets of the terroir and its appellation, not forgetting the 21 Grands Crus Classés in 1855.

Get your taste buds ready, the flavors are going to explode when you taste them !

Margaux, a magnificent estuary to discover in the Médoc

Vineyards and wine aren't the only attractions of this town, which draws lovers of this delicious red wine every year. Nestled in the countryside, between the river, forest, and marshes, Margaux is also a pleasure to explore on foot, by bike, on horseback, or even by horse-drawn carriage. The Garonne River is perfect for river trips that will take you to Île Margaux, a natural site at the mouth of the Gironde estuary that is also an exceptional wine estate not to be missed. Other islands dot the Gironde estuary, such as Île Nouvelle, Île Pâté, Île du Nord, Île Macau, and Île Cazeau— natural havens boasting remarkable biodiversity where migratory birds love to rest.

Wow! That's the perfect word to describe the tidal bore, a very rare event that occurs on the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. What looks like a wave, its size varying with the tides, is a natural phenomenon that can reach over 2 meters in height and speeds of 20 km/h. The more adventurous will be thrilled to put on their wetsuits and grab their boards to surf the wave, while the spectacle can be observed in Macau, just 10 minutes from Margaux.
