4 reasons to go to the Médoc to enjoy Indian summer

The sun is still shining! The school holidays are over, but many of you are still hoping for a taste of sunshine on your skin, a little sand between your toes, and long weekends … If you're craving sun, beach time, and relaxation, why not spend a weekend or longer in the Médoc? To give you a little nudge (do we really need it?), we've put together four great reasons to visit the Médoc and Haut-Médoc regions at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn!

1. Vineyards and gastronomy!

As you might have guessed, it's impossible to talk about the Médoc without mentioning its vineyards. Médoc itself evokes the promise of a fine vintage, the perfect complement to a delicious meal … You're spoiled for choice in the region, as no fewer than 60 classified growths across 8 appellations share this exceptional wine-growing territory. But what gives the vines the opportunity to produce such a distinctive and unique wine? With 600 châteaux (not all of which can be visited!), renowned Cru Bourgeois estates, and high-quality artisanal wines, there's a range of bottles to suit every budget and every food and wine pairing. It's thanks to the climate, the location between two bodies of water (the Gironde estuary and the nearby ocean), and the unique and rich geology that provides the vines with a majestic terroir for the grape varieties to flourish.

You can also explore the Médoc Wine Route. By bike, it's a fantastic route, bathed in sunshine and offering stunning vineyard landscapes. It's a friendly destination, full of interesting encounters! 2. The discovery of the estuary

An estuary is a story in itself. It's a place with a unique geology, the meeting point of several river currents, here the Dordogne and the Garonne, which together form the Gironde. Before reaching the vast ocean, the river meanders, widens, develops its character , and erodes its banks, accumulating history and sediment. The flora and fauna are fascinating to discover in the Médoc, thanks to the diversity of habitats on land and in the river. Deer, wild boar, and roe deer roam the forest, while semi-aquatic species like otters and minks inhabit the riverbanks, sharing the space with bats. The birds, which love wetlands for breeding and nesting, are a delight to observe in the region. There are also many species of toads, frogs, turtles, newts, lizards… Those in the know will be able to find them!

Europe's largest estuary is also a haven for numerous fish, some sixty species in total. Eels, mullet, white shrimp, and also sea fish, as you approach the ocean: sea bass, sole, meagre… Anglers should check the regulations before heading out, as the estuary is classified as a maritime domain up to the Bec d'Ambès; beyond that point, it falls under the jurisdiction of the Gironde fishing federation. Have fun!

Several charming villages await discovery, perfect for strolling, dining, or enjoying a coffee. Visit Port Macau, with its lovely houses, the tidal bore, and the small islands, most of which belong to the Coastal Conservancy. These islands are wild and inhabited by various bird species, and some are even covered in vineyards. The small port of Issan is also worth a visit, bordering the vineyards of the prestigious Margaux châteaux. Opposite, you'll find the eponymous " Petite Île de Margaux" (Little Island of Margaux )! Pleasant walks await you…

Take advantage of your visit to the Médoc to take the ferry from the Port of Lamarque and visit the Citadel of Blaye on the other side of the estuary. The journey is pleasant.

3. Shells and crustaceans, on the deserted beach…

Abandoned, yes, but for your greatest pleasure! The beaches of Gironde are a true paradise in the off-season. The water is still warm, there's still plenty of entertainment, the restaurants are open, and all this, just for you…

Grab your bath towel, park your car and head out to conquer the dunes (on the marked paths, do not walk on the dunes so as not to damage the flora which holds back the erosion of the sand massif).

Lovers of unspoiled nature will appreciate the beaches of Le Porge. Surrounded by dunes for 13 kilometers, they are supervised in the summer (beware of rip currents, don't swim just anywhere) and also offer numerous hiking trails for those who enjoy seaside walks. These two beaches are close to Bordeaux. On Jenny Beach, naturism is practiced next to a very large naturist holiday center, one of the largest in France!

Further north lies Lacanau Océan, a name familiar to all beachgoers and those who enjoy a lively nightlife. It's a vibrant seaside resort, especially popular for surfing. How pleasant it is to sit on a café terrace by the beach and watch the surfers ride the waves! Sixteen kilometers of beach await you, lined with shops, holiday accommodations, restaurants, and more. A little secret: if you prefer a quieter spot than the main beach, head to Plage du Lion, accessible only by bike via the cycle path. It's located further south, halfway to Le Porge.

We continue a little further north to reach Carcans Plage, a popular spot for surfers, ideal for sunbathing and partying in the evenings. The beach is well-supervised until mid-September. It's easily accessible with a large car park and amenities. It's a great place for camping, and there are bars and shops during the summer season.

We continue north to Hourtin Plage, a charming family-friendly seaside resort. It's also a surfing spot, less crowded and therefore more suitable for beginners. Swimming is permitted in the summer in a supervised area. Hourtin is peaceful in the off-season, making it an ideal location for quick beach access, as the car park is right next to the beach entrance. Cycling is a delight; take the cycle path and explore the forest trails. You can even go all the way to the lake; everything is well signposted.

Naturists appreciate the privacy and beauty of the beaches at Vendays-Montalivet. The beach is surrounded by greenery and is pleasant.

At the tip of the Médoc peninsula lies Soulac-sur-Mer. It's an ideal spot for a few days' holiday. You're well situated, not far from the estuary and shops, and Royan is accessible by ferry – a perfect stopover for a day trip to the city! Three beaches will appeal to three types of holidaymakers: the central beach for those who like to be in the heart of the action and be around people; Amélie beach for surfers and those who enjoy watching them or bodyboarding; and the southern beach for walkers and those who prefer peace and quiet. Soulac is a beautiful town to visit: stroll through its narrow streets lined with lovely villas, and discover the Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

4. Everyone to the lakes!

Too windy or too rough today? The ocean isn't calling? Head to the lakes! The Médoc lakes are magnificent, well-maintained, and perfect for a bike ride, a walk, or discovering water sports like windsurfing, boating, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). These wetlands are a protected natural environment, ideal for wildlife observation. Come early with your binoculars, when the sun is rising and the mist is lifting from the waters…

There's Lake Lacanau, which is dotted with cabins where you can rent boats or enjoy activities during the season. It covers 2,000 hectares and has supervised beaches for swimming and playing in the water with children! There are restaurants for lunch or dinner, and magnificent views of Bird Island.

France's largest freshwater lake awaits you in Carcans-Hourtin ! With its eight supervised beaches, it's a haven of pleasure. The water is clear and calm, and on windy days, there are even waves—that's how vast the lake is! Come to Hourtin port for a stroll, to admire the boats, try out the skate park, go cycling, and have lunch. Water sports are also available, and you might even spot some kitesurfers on windy days!
