Hiking in the Médoc: The picturesque port of Talais, its huts, artisans and oysters

Talais
Hiking in the Médoc: ...

The Port of Talais is a quintessential Médoc spot, located on the banks of the Gironde estuary, at its widest point where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. On a beautiful day (April is the best!), come and enjoy the Port of Talais loop or simply stroll along the harbor, on foot or by bike. You'll discover a stunning natural environment: Les Mattes. We won't spoil the surprise... Let's go!

A hike for the whole family

There aren't many places to take shelter on this hike, which means you need to set off on a sunny day and bring water and a hat. The whole family can join the adventure; it's about 6 kilometers or more if, like me , you extend the walk along the Talais channel to reach the banks of the estuary.

Start of the walk
The Mattes

You can start in the center of the village of Talais, at the church, where parking is readily available. For a while, you'll follow the cycle path that crosses the Mattes. These are cultivated lands or pastures. The Mattes are unique in that they lie below the level of the estuary (during high tides), so how is it that they remain above water? It's thanks to an ingenious system of canals, inspired by Dutch polders, brought by monks, which, along with a dike, allows land to be reclaimed from the sea.

Overview

And then what? How about visiting the pretty seaside town of Soulac-sur-Mer? We'll take you there for a stroll for your next beautiful day in the Médoc.

The Port of Talais, colorful and bucolic

The Port of Talais is a pleasant spot, and in season you can find places to eat. It was a bustling port from the late 19th century until 1970. Today, it's a marina, renovated by the municipality. In season, you can take short boat trips. The atmosphere is truly authentic; you feel like you've stepped back in time! Sit down with a glass of dry white wine and some oysters on your plate, enjoying the sea spray and the wind in your hair – it's pure bliss. The Oyster Museum is also located on the port, where you can learn more about the harvesting of this renowned seafood. Stroll along the thirty or so fishermen's huts. Motorhome owners can spend the night in one of the three designated areas.

Restoration

Just a little further upstream, visit the Richard Lighthouse, a truly charming spot maintained by volunteers from a local association. The setting is similar, but the view is a bit higher and closer to fishing huts on stilts. You can also explore Fort Médoc, one of the estuary's defensive works, designed by Vauban.

The banks of the Gironde

If you wish, continue your walk along the channel, taking the cycle path to reach the banks of the Gironde and the marshes. There you can admire the estuary and stroll along the dike, either on foot or by bike. There is a covered observation point, a picnic table, a barbecue, and public restrooms. The return to the village is the same way; just follow the yellow signs!

Fancy exploring the other side? Take the ferry to Royan, to Le Verdon, just a little further on! It's perfect for a day trip by sea and grabbing an ice cream, doing some shopping, or going to the beach!
