    • Saint-Emilion is a real gem in Gironde, famous throughout the world for its wine and its heritage.

      A medieval gem

      The medieval town of Saint-Emilion has retained all the charm of its origins : stones with golden reflections, roofs with Roman tiles, streets with views of the surrounding vineyards...

      An exceptional wine-growing region

      Saint-Emilion is located on the hillsides overlooking the Dordogne valley. The Saint-Emilion vineyard has 4 appellations :

      • Saint-Emilion
      • Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
      • Lussac Saint-Emilion
      • Puisseguin Saint-Emilion

      Saint-Emilion wines are renowned for their complexity in the mouth and their ability to age.

      A UNESCO heritage site

      In 1999, Saint-Emilion and its vineyards were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition highlights the richness of the region's cultural and wine heritage.

      The essentials of Saint-Emilion

      • The monolithic church and catacombs, unique in Europe ;
      • The numerous cloisters bear witness to the religious importance of Saint-Emilion in the Middle Ages ;
      • The hanging gardens offer panoramic views of the vineyard ;
      • The region's wineries offer tours and wine tastings (in moderation, of course).

    Very nice tourist office

    I felt compelled to share my experience with the Saint-Émilion Tourist Office because of how poorly an unexpected situation was handled. I had purchased tickets in advance for a church tour and was genuinely looking forward to it. Unfortunately, on the way to Saint-Émilion, I suffered a flat tire. It was completely outside of my control and resulted in me arriving approximately 15 minutes after the scheduled (group) tour departure. What disappointed me was the complete lack of flexibility or accommodation once I arrived. I explained the situation, showed that I had valid tickets, and politely asked whether it would be possible to join a later tour. I was told no. There was no attempt to find an alternative solution, no offer to transfer the tickets, no partial refund, and no indication that anyone was interested in helping despite the fact that my lateness was caused by an unforeseen roadside emergency. That Saint-Émilion tourism appears more preoccupied with nickel-and-dime economics than with the quality of its visitors’ experience is, quite frankly, rather disconcerting. The issue was not missing the original tour. The issue was the attitude and unwillingness to assist a paying visitor who encountered genuine travel difficulties. Tourism organizations exist to welcome visitors and help create positive experiences. Instead, I felt like I was treated as though the circumstances did not matter at all.I do not expect a tour group to wait—after all, a start time is a start time—but the complete absence of any alternatives is what is genuinely disappointing. Saint-Émilion is a beautiful destination and attracts visitors from all over the world. Because of that, I would expect a tourist office to understand that unexpected problems happen when people are traveling. Flat tires, traffic accidents, vehicle breakdowns, and other delays are realities of travel. While rules are important, customer service should also involve a degree of common sense and compassion. What makes the experience particularly frustrating is that I was not asking for anything unreasonable. I simply hoped to be accommodated on another tour, especially since I had already paid and had made every effort to arrive. A small gesture of goodwill would have completely changed my impression of the experience. Instead, I left feeling that customer service and visitor satisfaction were far less important than rigid adherence to policy. As a result, I paid for an experience that I was unable to attend due to circumstances beyond my control and received no assistance whatsoever in finding an alternative solution. The lack of empathy and customer-focused service was extremely disappointing. I hope the Tourist Office reviews its policies and empowers staff to exercise discretion when visitors encounter genuine emergencies. A little understanding can go a long way, and unfortunately that understanding was entirely absent during my visit. What made the situation even more frustrating was seeing from other reviews that visitors have been accommodated when issues arose. For example, one reviewer mentioned that they had accidentally booked a French-language tour and were allowed to switch to an English-language tour. This suggests that exceptions can be made when staff choose to exercise flexibility, which makes the refusal to accommodate my situation after an unexpected flat tire particularly disappointing. I also feel sorry for the many excellent businesses in Saint-Émilion that depend on tourism. The town itself is beautiful and full of welcoming restaurants, wineries, and local merchants, but my experience with the Tourist Office left a very different impression. Between the unwillingness to offer any alternative in a genuine emergency and the lack of responsiveness to follow-up emails, the Tourist Office did not reflect the level of hospitality I experienced elsewhere in the region. I will reconsider my next trip here. *Edit: Their response is a lie. I never came to see them in person and the tour (according to our friends) was not full. Honteuse.

    The staff were very professional and welcoming. However, a larger sign indicating the tourist office would be helpful.
