A stroll through Soul ...

Today, we're taking you on a stroll to Soulac-sur-Mer, a very attractive seaside town located at the tip of the Médoc peninsula. Soulac boasts 7 kilometers of fine sandy beaches, with views of the Cordouan lighthouse in the distance, as well as the Charente-Maritime coastline. It's an iconic town, renowned for its seaside bathing tradition and its elegant, sometimes exotic, and particularly charming early 20th- century neo-colonial villas. We suggest a leisurely 7km walk, perfect for families, to admire the must-see sights of Soulac-sur-Mer. Let's go for a stroll along the Soulacaise promenade!

Soulac-sur-Mer, a seaside town in the Médoc

Life is good in Soulac-sur-Mer, that's undeniable! Located at the northern tip of the Médoc, Soulac is a pleasant town. While some might say it's sleepy in winter, they simply don't appreciate its old-world charm, the many outdoor activities available nearby, and above all, the very convenient connection to the vibrant town of Royan, just a few kilometers away in Le Verdon. A quick ferry ride and off you go to party, shop, or experience the lively atmosphere of the city. Soulac is the kind of place whose population swells considerably in the summer (easily tenfold), as it's a very popular holiday destination in the Gironde. The beaches are absolutely magnificent, and the region's exceptionally high sunshine levels make it a true pleasure year-round for sea lovers. The first bathing establishment opened in Soulac in the 1860s. The benefits of the ocean, the iodine-rich air, the scent of the pine trees, and the peaceful atmosphere are extolled. With the rise of the railways, Soulac became easily accessible, and this cosmopolitan, bourgeois, and joyful medical tourism developed, bringing with it a wave of high-quality architectural growth.

But what first brought fame to Soulac was the religious pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, via the Soulac route (a secondary path). Benedictine monks settled in Soulac as early as the 11th century, and the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fin-des-Terres is a popular stop for those wishing to honor Saint Veronica, who brought back a drop of milk from the Virgin Mary: a relic.

Visit Soulac, a dynamic town perfect for holidays

To truly appreciate Soulac, you have to stroll through it. Wander with your nose in the air, admiring the pretty villas and inhaling the resinous, woody scent of the pines, before drifting towards the iodine and sea spray of the ocean. It's a whole poem in itself.

Visit the Médoc Atlantique Tourist Office ; the Soulac branch will provide you with a visitor's guide and map.

We begin our walk in the city center, at the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fin-des-Terres. This basilica, built in the 11th century, has a history full of twists and turns, and sand… Indeed, it was buried under the dunes at the end of the 18th century, like much of the city, which had to fight against the encroaching sand for a long time. Then, it was saved at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20t centuries thanks to the efforts of an archbishop of Bordeaux. You will notice that the building has not been completely excavated in order to preserve its structure. Step inside the church, which is well-documented with information about these events.

We'll then stroll towards the villa district to see the magnificent villas of Soulac. Most of them date from the first wave of construction between 1860 and 1890. There are 500 neo-colonial style villas in the town, and this historic village is an incomparable heritage ! The Soulac Villas Trail, offered by the Town Hall, will allow you to learn more about these iconic villas, most of which have lovely feminine names.

We then head towards the seafront to reach the Signal, a coastal residential building that has suffered the ravages of time, particularly erosion and silting. The seafront promenade runs along the coast and beaches. It is very pleasant, and as you approach the town center, there are restaurants and shops. In the distance, the Cordouan lighthouse and seawalls, breakwaters installed to counteract the effects of beach erosion, come into view.

Strawberry trees can be found in Soulac, as in Cap Ferret and Arcachon; these are trees with edible fruit (but I advise against eating them from these trees by the roadside or on private property).

At this point, you can stay in the town center or continue towards the Batterie des Arros, bunkers that are remnants of the Atlantic Wall from World War II. Today, it's a popular spot for graffiti artists and perfect for a stroll. Right next door is the departure point for the little tourist train of Soulac, which runs to Pointe de Grave during the summer months. It's a real train on rails ! You'll also encounter a curiosity along the way: a replica of the Statue of Liberty !

In Soulac, you need to bring your bike. There are 3 routes to follow on a cycle path :

  1. Towards Montalivet in the forest;
  2. Towards Amélie beach on the seafront;
  3. Towards the Pointe de Grave.

End your stroll through Soulac with a stop in the town center. Most of the streets are pedestrianized, and in summer, it's lively and cheerful. There are shops, craft boutiques, souvenir stores, delicatessens with regional products, clothing and accessories... and of course, cafes, bars, and restaurants for refreshments. To delight children, there's no shortage of ice cream, waffles, and other sweet treats during the summer season.
