In the heart of Bordeaux's historic district, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (MADD) occupies an exceptional architectural site: an 18th-century private mansion and a former 19th-century municipal prison, combined into a single visitor route. Both buildings have been listed as historical monuments since 2018.
Inaugurated in its current form in 1924, and subsequently enriched, the museum is housed in the Hôtel de Lalande, a private mansion built in the 18th century, whose collections of furniture, ceramics, glassware, goldsmithing, musical instruments and personal objects constitute a valuable testimony to the history of Bordeaux, city of the Enlightenment and major trading port.
The museum's collection comprises approximately 35,000 works. Beyond its permanent exhibition, the MADD regularly updates its presentation of design collections, fostering a dialogue between different eras around themes such as use, techniques, and the role of objects in our daily lives. The museum also programs temporary exhibitions, workshops, talks, and lectures.
Since 2023, a major modernization project has made it possible to unite the two listed buildings, with a partial reopening in April 2026 — reception, shop, restaurant and new exhibition spaces — and a full opening planned for 2027.
