Place Gambetta Historic Monuments in Bordeaux

Place Gambetta is one of Bordeaux's emblematic squares, a true architectural gem of the 18th century. Formerly known as Place Dauphine, it was developed from the mid-18th century onwards under the leadership of Intendant Tourny, as part of his vast program to beautify the city. It is framed by a group of classical cut stone buildings, whose uniform facades are characterized by arcades on the ground floor, wrought iron balconies and sculpted mascarons, offering perfect visual harmony. The square owes its current name to Léon Gambetta, a 19th-century French politician.

Beyond its rich historical past, marked by episodes ranging from its role as the city's geographical "zero point" to events during the French Revolution, Place Gambetta underwent a major redevelopment completed in 2021. This project transformed part of the square, formerly open to car traffic, into a vast landscaped and pedestrian space. Featuring a structured garden, a central pool and numerous seats, it has become a popular place for walking and relaxation, while retaining its role as a major crossroads and public transport convergence point in the heart of Bordeaux.
