    • Château du Hamel, a historical immersion in the heart of the Garonne

Overlooking the confluence of the Garonne River and the Garonne Canal, the Château du Hamel, located in Castets-en-Dorthe, offers a breathtaking panorama and a true immersion in medieval history. Built in the 14th century on the foundations of an ancient fortified settlement, this historically rich site captivates visitors with both its architecture and its unique strategic location in the Gironde region.

A castle marked by the great moments in French history

Built by Raymond Guilhem de Goth, nephew of Pope Clement V, the castle has survived the centuries, playing a central role in many historical events. Recaptured from the English during the Hundred Years' War by Bertrand Du Guesclin, it was later remodeled in the 16th century by Jean de Favas, who added its characteristic triangular bastions.
In 1585, during the Wars of Religion, the castle was besieged before being liberated by Henry of Navarre, the future Henry IV, accompanied by Sully, who stayed there. Since 1697, the property has belonged to the du Hamel family, who gave it its current name and perpetuate its history.

A guided tour combining heritage, panoramic views, and anecdotes

Open to the public from Easter to All Saints' Day by appointment, the Château du Hamel can be explored through fascinating guided tours. You'll discover the history of the site, its transformations over the centuries, and enjoy a remarkable view of the Garonne River and the canal.
This visit, both cultural and immersive, is aimed at heritage enthusiasts as well as those curious to find an original outing in Gironde.
