Pont Jacques Chaban Delmas Historic Monuments in Bordeaux

The Jacques Chaban-Delmas Bridge, inaugurated in 2013, is a modern symbol of Bordeaux and an architectural feat. Located in the north of the city, it connects the districts of Bacalan and La Bastide, providing a new crossing over the Garonne, essential for smoothing traffic flow. Its most spectacular feature is its central lifting span, the highest in Europe. This section, nearly 118 meters long and weighing more than 2,400 tons, can be raised in around ten minutes thanks to a system of counterweights, allowing the passage of large ships, including cruise ships, to the Port de la Lune. The bridge's 80-meter-high pylons light up according to the tides – blue for high tide, green for low tide – adding a distinctive aesthetic touch.

Designed by Lavigne & Chéron Architectes and Hardesty & Hanover, the bridge is not only a functional asset with its lanes for vehicles, public transport, pedestrians and cyclists, but also a true icon. Its liftings, which take place around 60 times a year, are events in themselves, attracting curious and enthusiastic visitors. Beyond its role in relieving Bordeaux traffic congestion, the Jacques Chaban-Delmas Bridge has transformed access to the city center for ships and has significantly contributed to the economic and tourist dynamism of the metropolis.
