Cool off on the lakes and rivers of the Bordeaux metropolitan area

  • If you're staying in Bordeaux, a day trip to Bordeaux-Lac is a wonderfully refreshing nature outing. You can swim in the designated swimming area. The sailing center offers the opportunity to try sailing. The forest path that circles the lake is also a very pleasant walk.
  • Lake Bègles is open during the summer season. Swimming is supervised. You can choose between a sandy beach and a grassy area for relaxing. On-site, you'll find all the necessary amenities: restrooms, changing cabins, sports fields, canoe and paddleboard rentals, etc.

During periods of intense heat, the Water Mirror is the place to be in Bordeaux. Located on Place de la Bourse, facing the Garonne River, it's not a place for swimming per se, but it's a favorite spot for young and old alike to get their feet wet and enjoy the refreshing mist in the heart of the city.

Have fun at the leisure parks of the Great Lakes of the Médoc

A series of lakes and ponds runs along the Gironde coastline.

  • Lake Carcans-Hourtin is a beautiful natural lake.
  • For swimming, head to the Port d'Hourtin beach. With its water sports and leisure facilities, restaurants, and restrooms, it's very comfortable. There's also a water play area for children.
  • On Lake Lacanau, the beaches of Moutchic and Grande Escoure are well-equipped with water sports clubs. The southern part of the lake is wilder and more natural.
  • On the Cazaux and Sanguinet lakes, there are plenty of activities: swimming, water sports, fishing spots… During the summer, the beaches of Cazaux-Lac and Laouga are equipped with games and entertainment for children.
  • In the Arcachon Basin, in Gujan-Mestras, Lake Magdeleine is a family-friendly spot. Out of season, it's a fishing lake, home to ducks and swans. Along the lake's edge and in the surrounding woods, you'll find a shaded playground and a picnic area with restrooms. In the summer, children will love the Mini Pirate Port, which offers boat rides on the lake.

Swimming in the Isle and Dronne rivers, in the Libournais region

The Libournais region is a land of fresh water! The Isle is a tributary of the Dordogne, which meanders peacefully through this wine-growing territory.

  • In Saint-Seurin-sur-L'Isle, the Charbonnière leisure park boasts a lovely beach for wading in the river. On site, you have access to a picnic area, a children's playground, and you can enjoy canoe and kayak trips on the Isle River.
  • Coutras is located at the confluence of the Isle and the Dronne, a tributary of the Dordogne. The Dronne is a river with very green banks. The Coutras water sports center benefits from this privileged environment. There you can enjoy various water sports: canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
  • The Dagueys Natural Site is an international nautical center, equipped for competition. You might even break some swimming records there! During the summer, it hosts a leisure center with a supervised swimming area. It's also a renowned fishing spot. Strolling along its discovery trail, you'll learn all about this protected natural area, its flora and fauna.

Canoeing and kayaking on the lake

Take a river trip on the Dordogne and Garonne rivers, in the Entre-deux-Mers region.

To discover the Dordogne or the Garonne rivers, there's nothing like a boat trip. You'll see magnificent scenery while enjoying the refreshing coolness of the water. You can take a boat trip from Libourne. The Bec d'Ambès is the confluence of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers. There's no better vantage point to admire the Gironde estuary and observe the tidal bore, an exceptional phenomenon. You can dip your toes in the water, but swimming is not recommended due to the currents. For swimming or water sports, head to the Beaujet leisure center. It's located in Ambarès-et-Lagrave on the Blanche lake.

A little further inland in the Entre-Deux-Mers region, the Domaine Département de Blasimon is a verdant haven surrounding a large lake. A water sports center is set up there during the summer. The site is protected, with various wetland habitats: reedbeds, hornbeam groves, meadows… which you can explore on a discovery trail.

The Ciron Valley and Gorges are characterized by lush vegetation. The forest canopy extends over the river, so the banks are always shaded and the setting is idyllic. It's a very pleasant place during hot summer days.

To experience a more Landes-style atmosphere, the Domaine des Lacs d'Hostens is located in the heart of a pine forest. At Lake Lamothe, you can swim, canoe, or enjoy a pedal boat ride. Swimming is supervised, and you can relax on its sandy beach in complete tranquility.
